Writing Task 1: Coherence and Cohesion [5%]
Instructions Draft a document of about 800-1000 words to introduce your capstone project, applying the writing techniques that you have learnt in Weeks 2 and 3. You should write about 5 paragraphs to address the following points in this order:
- Introduction (100 words)
- Current situation/methods (250 words)
- Problem identification (200 words)
- Objectives (50 words)
- Proposed solution (200 words) It is not necessary to create a heading for these items, but you should start each item in a separate paragraph. A brief description of the content required for each paragraph is provided below.
- Summary In this paragraph, provide a brief overview of your research topic, and suggest why it is important to attend to this topic. Then, briefly state the problems that you are addressing, and how you propose to solve these problems.
- Current situation/ methods In this paragraph, introduce any necessary background to your topic and clarify the definition of keywords, and review some methods that are currently being used to address the topic of your study.
- Problem identification Building on the background and methods discussed in the previous paragraph, identify any problems with the current situation or methods that you wish to address in your project.
- Objectives/ deliverables Using dot-points, break down your solution into a few objectives that your project aims to deliver, in order to solve the problems that you have identified in the previous paragraph.
- Proposed solution In this paragraph, briefly propose how you intend to solve the problem, and if possible, the dataset that you will be using. Finally, finish the paragraph with a sentence highlighting the advantage or benefits of using the solution that you are proposing. This Writing Task primarily assesses your ability to demonstrate coherence and cohesion in your writing, using the techniques introduced in the lecture. You will have the opport unity to make changes to your project, so do not worry if you are still developing your ideas for the project. As this is part of the ongoing formative assessment to help you with your planning process, we will be going through a few drafts to prepare you for writing the final report towards the end of your course. You should make use of the Criteria Sheet provided in the Assessment folder on Blackboard to guide your response. Examples of proposal writing are also available in the assessment folder. Submission guidelines You must submit your document through the Turnitin link provided on Blackboard by 4pm on Tuesday, 22 March. It should be submitted as a single Microsoft Word document, typed in Calibri font size 11, 1.5- line spacing and normal margins, with your name and student number provided at the top of the page. You should also cite any references you use in the body of your text according to the APA 6th edition style guide, and attach a reference list (not included in the word count) on a separate page.
