Assessment task:
You have been employed as a project Manager with Delphi Printers and Peripherals to lead Project Gamma a project that requires the development of a new and innovative consumer printer. To help develop the project management maturity of your organisation, your company has asked you to write an essay about your management of this project.
Drawing on at least six (6) academic sources, write an essay discussing the decisions you made in your management of Project Gamma and how those decisions impacted the outcome of the project.
To do this effectively, you will need to integrate your experiences from the simulation with the academic literature, and critically discuss:
- project constraints and their importance for project management
- different techniques for managing project constraints, and
- how your approach to managing Project Gammas constraints (the different techniques or strategies you used) affected the projects outcome
You can discuss both positive and negative aspects of your project, and refer to examples within the simulation, but make sure you do not simply provide an account of what you did. Your essay needs to focus on why you made the decisions you made (i.e., justifications of your decisions using academic sources), and how those decisions affected the project.
PLEASE NOTE:To complete this assessment you must run Project Gamma in the HBR Simulation only one time. You canrun Projects Alpha and Beta as many times as you liketo get used to the simulation and being a Project Manager at this company butonly run Project Gammaone time! Only when you are ready, should you progress to completing Project Gamma. Please be sure to check the project brief, as the Project titles are included. If you happen to access Gamma early, simply click on the archived runs button and return to previous projects.
Please note that you can only run Project Gamma one time because in reality, you do not get to stop a project and re-start it because you do not like the decisions you
have made, or you would like to change a decision that has been made. Instead, you have to deal with the consequences (outcomes) of your decisions and adjust your techniques or approaches and future decisions accordingly. Running Project Gamma one time only provides you with a more realistic experience of how projects will unfold.
Other Notes:
- To complete this assessment, you need to run the HBR Simulation on Project Management (https://hbsp.harvard.edu/import/1003166). After you purchase the licence, your Course Coordinator will assign the Projects within 48 hours from the time you purchase the software (and once classes have begun), so please be patient.
- Please read the information on how to run the Projects and what to think about when you are acting as Project Manager.
- It will be helpful if you make notes about what you are doing and why as you run the Projects. You will need to draw on your experiences from managing Project Gamma in order to write your essay.
- There is no requirement to include screenshots in your essay. However, if you do, put these at the end of your essay. All of your references must be relevant to your essay and should only be drawn from peer-reviewed literature (you can find out more about that here). You must use at least six (6) peer reviewed sources, and at least five (5) must be peer reviewed journal articles. This allows you to demonstrate you understand the broader knowledge bases within which we study and apply project management. Without sufficient references, you will simply be providing a superficial account of your experiences in the simulation. You can use the course text and other articles we have provided in Stream, but make sure they are peer reviewed and appropriate for your essay. You can find out about research information for assignments here.
