You are an IT consulting group bidding on a network/server upgrade project. The potential customer, WFG (Win Financial Group) is a startup with about 30 employees. They have just received their first round of funding so have money to invest in growing the company, including building out new IT systems. Your job is to put together a proposal that meets their requirements at a reasonable price.
Request for Proposal (RFP)
Win Financial Group (WFG) is a successful and growing financial consulting company. We are looking for a partner to help us acquire a new IT infrastructure. We currently have about 30 employees but plan on growing to 200 employees over the next year. We have leased a 20,000 square foot building (two 10,000 sq. ft. floors) that is ready to go with office furniture, ethernet cabling, desks, cubicals, power, etc. The building has an IDF on each floor and a separate MDF on the first floor.
We need a proposal for an edge network to allow wired and wireless end-user devices to connect to corporate resources. We also need a core network to connect the edge wired and wireless networks and servers. We require two local servers, one to support Active Directory/DNS/DHCP and one to be a file server. Finally, we need a second Active Directory server to run in the cloud for fault tolerance.
Detailed IT Needs
WFG needs to prepare for growth to 200 employees. Our helpdesk administrator will take care of basic IT needs such as personal computers, Microsoft Office applications, email, cubicals, patch cables, power, and the like. The security administrator will take care of the firewall, anti-virus, and other security issues. You do not need to account for labor installing, configuring, or managing any of these solutions. You must give the exact list of the hardware/software/services you are proposing, not just a list of options/suggestions. Your proposal will need to include the following solutions:
1) WIRED EDGE NETWORK: 1Gb Ethernet edge network to support at least 100 personal computers. In addition, the edge network must support 200 IP phones that require PoE+.
The edge switches must support 4 VLANs (1st floor PCs, 2 nd floor PCs, WiFi, and VoIP) but do not need to route between VLANs, that will be done in the core. The uplinks between the edge switches and the core network must be multi-gigabit speeds (2.5Gb or better). There is Cat 6a Ethernet and multi-mode fiber cables between each IDF (data closet) and MDF (data center). In the case of the fiber links, you do *not* need to provide transceivers (optics). There is an IDF on each of the two floors plus a separate MDF on the first floor. Half the edge switches will be in each of the two IDFs. The core switch(es) will be in the MDF.
Things to Consider (Hints): How many Ethernet switches do you need on each floor and their port counts? How will you connect the switches to each other and to the core? What features do you need to support PoE+ (Power over Ethernet Plus) for the phones, VLANs, and high-speed uplinks to core? Choose the brand and model switches that fit the requirements. A good business class edge 48-port PoE switch will run between $2,000 and $6,000 each.
- CORE NETWORK: Multi-gigabit Ethernet core network to support multi-gig to the 2 servers, uplinks to the edge switches, and all the PoE WiFi access points. The access points need to be powered by PoE+. All connections in the core must be 2.5Gb or better and some require PoE+. Depending on the brand/model, you may need two different switch models to meet all the requirements.
All routing between the VLANs will be done in the core. In total, there will be 5 networks/VLANs. The networks/VLANs are 1st floor PCs, 2 nd floor PCs, WiFi, VoIP, and Servers (4 edge VLANs plus Servers). Each network, other than the WiFi network, will need a block of ~250 private IP addresses. Be careful with the WiFi subnet, make sure the mask works and doesnt overlap other subnets you use.
Things to Consider (Hints): How many, and what type/media, multigigabit ports do you need to support the uplinks to the switches, server connections, and uplinks to the access points (PoE+)? What will your IP address/VLAN scheme look like? A good business class core layer-3 switch will run between $3,000 and $8,000 each.
- WIFI EDGE NETWORK: WiFi 5 or better wireless network to support at least 400 WiFi devices on each floor. Each floor is 10,000 square feet and has minimal interference. Access points will directly connect the core network (MDF) at multi-gigabit speeds (2.5Gb or better). Dont get confused here, the access points home run to the core switches, they do not need to connect to the edge switches. Access points must support both a private company SSID and a guest SSID and be powered by PoE.
Things to Consider (Hints): How many access points do you need for each floor? Think about a classroom at the U of U, there are usually 3 access points in a single classroom. Estimate the maximum number of students per classroom and you have a good rule of thumb. How fast should the Ethernet uplinks be to the core based on your choice of WiFi 5 or WiFi 6? How many endpoints can the access points support effectively? NOTE: Just because an access point can handle say 250 endpoints, that doesnt mean it would work well. The number of devices per AP should be a heck of a lot less than 250. A good business class AP will run between $300 and $1,000 each.
- LOCAL AD: Local Windows 2019 Server to run Active Directory locally. This server will also run DNS and DHCP for your network. You must specify the server brand and model, type, number, and size of drives, disk redundancy (RAID level), CPU, NIC speed (2.5Gb or better), and amount of RAM. You must also include the required Windows Server licensing.
Things to Consider (Hints): How beefy of a server do you need based on the requirements of Windows Server 2019 and the services this server will run (AD/DNS/DHCP)? What will the local storage look like (number and type of disk/SSD, RAID level, etc.)? Will this run on a physical server or will you virtualize? What licensing do you need to buy, Server Licensing (cores, CALs), virtualization, etc.? A good business class server will run between $5,000 and $10,000 (not
including Windows Server licensing).
5) LOCAL FILE SHARE: Local Windows 2019 Server or NAS to act as a file server, plan on about 5TB of user data. You must specify the server brand and model, type, number, and size of drives, disk redundancy (RAID), CPU, NIC speed (2.5Gb or better), and amount of RAM. You must also include the required Windows Server licensing.
Things to Consider (Hints): How beefy of a server do you need based on the requirements of Windows Server 2019, file sharing, and storing 5TB of total user data? What will the local storage look like (number and type of disk/SSD, RAID level, etc.)? Will this run on a physical server or will you virtualize? What licensing do you need to buy, Server Licensing (cores, CALs), virtualization, etc.? A good business class server, with extra storage, will run between $7, and $15,000 (not including Windows Server licensing).
6) CLOUD AD: Cloud-based Windows 2019 Server to run an off-site copy of the Active Directory database. You must specify the cloud service(s) you will use. Depending on if you use an IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS will determine your BoM. For example, if you use an IaaS, youll need to specify the type and amount of storage, redundancy, CPU, NIC, and amount of RAM. You must also include any required Windows Server licensing. On the other end, if you do SaaS, youll be more focused on detailing the exact software as a service youll be using and the associated fees.
Things to Consider (Hints): Will you use MS Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, or some other service? Why? If you go with IaaS, what performance level (disk, RAM, network, CPU) do you require to run Windows Server with Active Directory? Do you need to buy any software (IaaS or PaaS) or is that bundled in with the monthly fees (SaaS)? Any considerations on how to connect the local AD server to the cloud AD server? A cloud server like this will run between $200 and $1,000 per month, perhaps more if you go with SaaS.
1) LAYER 1 MAP: How do all the devices get physically connected and what is the link speed? Where does the Internet connection tie in? NOTE: The WFG security administrator will take care of the firewall and Internet access, so you dont need much detail on that. Your map should be consistent with your BOMs. Dont try to show every device (example 200 phones), just show some examples. Use Visio or LucidChart to create this map.
2) LAYER 3 MAP: Show all the logical networks (VLANs) and the IP address range assigned to each. No need to show the physical layout or host IP addresses, just show how you will address each VLAN and how the router and firewall/Internet fits in. You dont need to include your cloud server as long as you show the local firewall and Internet connection. Use Visio or LucidChart to create this map.
3) WIRED NETWORKING BOM (Bill of Materials): List out the details of all the Ethernet switches you recommend. Note that the edge switches might be a different make/model than the core switch(es). In the description, indicate the availability of key features such as routing, PoE, and uplink ports. The BOM should include Make, Model #, Description, Quantity, Unit Price, and
Total Price. The description should not be marketing fluff. Instead, the description should show that your recommended hardware meets *all* the requirements. Include one-time and ongoing prices/costs.
4) WIRELESS NETWORKING BOM: List out the details of all the access points you recommend. In the description, indicate how they will be powered and connect back to the core switches. The BOM should include Make, Model #, Description, Quantity, Unit Price, and Total Price. The description should show that your recommended hardware meets *all* the requirements, skip the marketing fluff. Include one-time and ongoing prices/costs.
5) SERVER(S) BOM: List out the details of any the servers you recommend. In the description, indicate CPU, RAM, storage, and NIC in each server. In addition to the hardware, there should be line items for the required software licensing. The BOM should include Make, Model/Part #, Description, Quantity, Unit Price, and Total Price. The description should show that your recommendations meet *all* the requirements. Include one-time and ongoing prices/costs.
6) CLOUD BOM: List out all the cloud services you are proposing. Include the exact services you will be using, and any licensing required to run Active Directory. Include one-time and ongoing prices/costs.
7) SUMMARY: In no more than one page, summarize how you made your decisions on what solutions to propose. Indicate any extras you included (exceeded requirements) and any shortfalls (didnt meet requirements). Also, show the total cost of the solution you are proposing, indicating both one-time and ongoing costs. Your summary should sell your proposal, explaining how it meets or exceeds the requirements at a reasonable price.
The only required software is a text editor (MS Word, etc.), spreadsheet program (MS Excel, etc.), diagram/mapping software (Visio or LucidChart), and a PDF generator (Primo PDF, Adobe Acrobat, etc.) to convert everything to PDF before uploading to Canvas.
For the two maps, to see some examples, search for terms such as images of network maps and choose Images. Here is an example:
Other terms to search include images of a VLAN map and images of network diagrams. Feel free to try other terms. Use the results to get ideas, but make your own maps based your own thoughts and preferences and conforming to the requirements of this assignment. And use what you learned in this class on what layer one is (physical) and layer 3 (logical).
A great way to find top vendors/manufacturers of networking, server, and cloud solutions is to access Gartner and other IT industry research firms. Once on Gartners secure website, you can review documents such as Magic Quadrant for Wired and Wireless LAN Access Infrastructure, Magic Quadrant for Data Center and Cloud Networking, and Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure and Platform Services.
To create the BOMs, start with datasheets and configuration tools from networking/server/cloud companies you know of or found via your Gartner research. Many sites you will find useful tools such as detailed datasheets and even live build tools, many times found through links like this:
If pricing is not provided on the manufacturers site, use 3rd party web sites to get pricing. Possible sites include http://www.neweggbusiness.com , http://www.cdw.com , http://www.tigerdirect.com , http://www.insight.com , etc. These sites might also offer datasheets, configurators, and other tools.
Use a spreadsheet program to create each of your BOMs and include columns for make, model, description, quantity, unit price, total price, notes, and any other useful information. Please make sure it is clear that your solution meets all the requirements such as number of ports, storage, features, performance, etc.
